The Struggle to Be Authentic
Do you feel like something keeps holding you back? You want to be yourself, to speak your truth, trust your instincts, and stop overthinking what others think of you. You tell yourself you should feel confident, but deep down you doubt your worth, worry about being judged, or fear being “too much.” Using EFT tapping for self-doubt can help release those layers of fear and reconnect you with your authentic truth.”
This quiet struggle affects more of us than we realise. I see this pattern often with the clients I work with, at times I too have felt this way. We have a deep desire to be authentic but it is tangled with the old fears that make us hide.
Let’s explore why this happens, and how you can begin to release self-doubt gently and safely.
Why It’s Hard to Be Yourself
Fear of Judgment and Rejection
From an early age, we learn to adapt – to say what’s acceptable, to fit in, to please. The nervous system records these early experiences, linking authenticity with danger or disapproval. Even as adults, that same fear can surface as hesitation, people-pleasing, or constant self-criticism.
Conditioning and People Pleasing
Cultural, familial, and even ancestral patterns shape how we see ourselves. You might have been taught that being humble meant shrinking your light or that success required perfection. Over time, those messages become internal rules that are hard to break.
Self Doubt & Emotional Stress
Comparison and perfectionism often feed self-doubt – the more we chase an impossible standard, the more we disconnect from our own worth. Social media, societal pressure, and our own inner critic can amplify these feelings of “not good enough.”
Over time, this constant pressure keeps the body in a state of stress, increasing tension, fatigue, and even disrupting sleep, digestion, and immune function. These are common signs for those learning to overcome self-criticism and emotional overwhelm. The self-doubt becomes a constant background noise that drains your energy.
Disconnection From Inner Wisdom
When we’re in a constant state of stress or striving, it’s easy to lose touch with our intuition, our inner voice – that quiet inner guidance that knows what feels right. Without that connection, we make choices from fear rather than truth.
The Hidden Costs of Hiding Your True Self
Hiding who you really are doesn’t just cause emotional fatigue, it affects every part of your wellbeing.
- Emotional exhaustion: constantly editing yourself is tiring.
- Anxiety and stress: suppressing emotions keeps the nervous system in overdrive.
- Lack of fulfilment: you may achieve goals but still feel disconnected or empty.
- Strained relationships: when you’re not authentic, others can’t truly see you.
Studies show that suppressing emotions increases cortisol levels and contributes to burnout. When we live out of alignment with our true selves, the body feels that dissonance.
Gentle Yet Powerful Ways to Overcome Self-Doubt
Healing self-doubt isn’t about forcing confidence, it’s about releasing what’s in the way. There are number of practices that I use that can help you reconnect with your authentic self:
1. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)
EFT, or tapping, combines gentle acupressure with focused intention. By tapping on specific meridian points while acknowledging your feelings, you calm the nervous system and rewire emotional patterns. Many describe EFT tapping for self-doubt as a simple yet powerful way to rebuild self-trust.
Clients often describe feeling lighter, clearer, and more at peace after just a few rounds. It’s like the voice of the inner critic finally softens.
2. Somatic Practices
Your body holds wisdom. Through breathwork, mindful movement, and stillness, you can notice where self-doubt lives (maybe it’s a tight chest or a clenched jaw), and release it safely.
3. Compassionate Self-Talk
Shifting from “I’m not enough” to “I’m learning to trust myself” changes your inner landscape. This gentle reframe builds new neural pathways of self-acceptance.
4. Supportive Community
Being in a space where you feel seen and accepted allows deeper healing. Sharing your truth in a supportive group helps dissolve shame and replaces isolation with connection.
Beyond What You Thought Was Possible
When you release layers of self-judgment and fear, you begin a journey of authentic self-healing, one that allows your natural confidence and calm to shine through something beautiful happens, you remember who you are.
Participants from my Just Be You Program, share that they start to speak more freely, make decisions that align with their truth, and start to experience a natural sense of confidence rather than one you have to “fake.”
Here’s what past participants have shared:
“I began turning old voice journal entries into a podcast, despite the fear of being heard.”
“I’m learning to stop pretending to always be smiley just to be liked.”
“At a conference, I stood up and shared my story without preparation. It was so healing, and I felt safe to be vulnerable.”
“I didn’t realise that I was holding on to the idea of perfectionism. I feel so much calmer & liberated being able to let go of that feeling. I now have compassion for myself.”
“I’m not overthinking every conversation anymore — I just feel more me.”
These small shifts are profound.
